The word ‘whiskey’ (or whisky) comes from the Gaelicuisce beatha, meaning water of life. Irish whiskey was one of the earliest distilled drinks in Europe, arising around the 12th century. It is believed that Irish monks brought the technique of distilling perfumes back to Ireland from their travels to the Mediterranean countries around 1000 A.D. The Irish then THANKFULLY modified this technique to obtain a drinkable spirit. Whiskey was first recorded in Ireland in 1405. It was later recorded in Scotland in 1494. The Old Bushmills Distillery claims to be the oldest surviving licensed distillery in the world.

Scotch whisky is divided into five distinct categories: single malt Scotch whisky, blended malt Scotch whisky, single grain Scotch whisky, blended grain Scotch whisky, and blended Scotch whisky. To be considered Scotch it must be made in Scotland and be aged in oak barrels for at least three years. Many barrels used to make Scotch are used Bourbon barrels imported from the US.

What is the difference between Tennessee
whiskey and bourbon?
Tennessee whiskey must be made in Tennessee.
Bourbon can technically be made anywhere in
the US, though it commonly is produced in
Kentucky.
Tennessee whiskey is filtered through sugar
maple charcoal before hitting the barrel and
bourbon goes straight to the barrel.
